Scubuntu: Enabling scientific computing on LinuxThe South African National Research and Development Strategy stresses the importance of investing in information and communications technology (ICT) to foster local development and globalisation. It specifically mentions Open Source Software (OSS) as an area where investment is desired. In line with this strategy and as an exercise in user empowerment, the CSIR and the national Government Departments are migrating to Ubuntu Linux. These migrations have highlighted a strong need for an open source scientific computing platform based on Ubuntu - a need which is not met by existing initiatives. The Scubuntu project of the Meraka Institute aims to create an Ubuntu-based platform that will provide scientific computing support in a naturally embedded manner, instead of a collection of additional features included in an existing enterprise-oriented ICT environment.
