Meraka Institute relocates Freedom Toaster to Menlyn shopping centre

6 June 2006

Digital product aficionados will now have the option of making free copies of various Free/Libre and Open Source Software and other offerings at the Menlyn shopping centre. The Meraka Institute has successfully relocated the Freedom Toaster, previously in the foyer of Building 43 A, to Computer Corporation. The Meraka Institute is a national research centre managed by the CSIR.

Freedom Toasters are conveniently located, self-contained, computer-based 'Bring 'n Burn' facilities. Like vending machines, preloaded to dispense confectionery, Freedom Toasters are preloaded to dispense free digital products, including software, photography, music and literature. Putting the Freedom Toaster in one of the most popular shopping centres in Pretoria makes it easily accessible from many of the eastern suburbs, including Mamelodi. The move was done after consultation with Jason Hudson, Project Manager and toaster guardian for the Canal Walk and The Shuttleworth Foundation.
