Digital Doorway - Features

A freestanding computer terminal allows 24-hour access to members of the community.

The terminals are encased in a steel housing with an LCD screen, a robust vandal-proof keyboard and a touchpad.

The Digital Doorway can be assembled as a four, three or two-terminal kiosk.

Content is customised to a local community to encourage people to explore. This may include applications and educational programmes include maths tutors, science software, music programmes, language tutors, an HIV/Aids presentation, the Internet, open source word processing and spreadsheet software.

Use of open source software makes remote management and administration possible:

  • For the single seaters:
    • User PC – Debian with KDE
    • File server – FreeBSD
  • For the four-seaters:
    • User PC – Mandrake with KDE
    • File server – FreeBSD

The Digital Doorway is cost-effective and requires only low maintenance. It can be used for other applications, such as government service delivery and information distribution.
