"Infrastructure is a critical success factor in research, and the ability of our scientists to perform cutting-edge research and to be competitive globally is linked to the availability of good state-of-the-art infrastructure for science and technology" - Min. of Science and Technology, Budget vote, 7 April 2005

There is a global trend to establish networked high performance computing (HPC) centres as major drivers of scientific research and innovation, providing service to researchers in various scientific and engineering disciplines, as well as to industry.

The Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC), housed in the CSIR Rosebank Campus in Cape Town, is the hub for computational research support and resource supply in Africa.

Inaugurated in May 2007, the CHPC is an initiative by the Department of Science and Technology, managed by the Meraka Institute of the CSIR, and hosted by the University of Cape Town (UCT). The CHPC operates within a multiple stakeholder and clientele environment.
